This article is perfect for those who long for a slower pace of life and are planning a small road trip near Fukuoka with elders and young children. It details a journey starting from Hakata City, taking only 40 minutes to reach the seaside town of ‘Itoshima,’ where you can explore the white container restaurant Ocean House, handmade pudding from a salt-making workshop in a hidden western spot, and Itoshima’s iconic white torii gate on the water.

For the first stop of our Fukuoka trip, we planned a self-drive tour to Itoshima, a coastal town just a 40-minute drive from the city. It seems to encapsulate all the tranquility and ease of Fukuoka. Seeing the torii gate on the water, tasting sea salt pudding, and strolling by the sea gave our Kyushu journey a delightful and pleasant start.

This article is not a typical “Itoshima attractions guide“; since we traveled with elders and a 6-month-old baby, our itinerary and attractions were arranged casually and loosely. However, we hope to share the leisurely afternoon of Itoshima travel through photos and words. The article includes insights on the Ocean House seaside restaurant, Itoshima flower salt pudding, and the torii gate on the water.

Introduction to Itoshima (系島)

Fukuoka Itoshima Travel Information

Location: Located in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture, about a 40-minute drive from Hakata/Tenjin city center.

Must-visit attractions: Sakurai Futamigaura Couple Rocks (white torii gate), Coconut Tree Swings, Totoro Forest.

Must-try foods: Itoshima Sea Salt Pudding, Oyster Huts (winter exclusive), Seaview Cafes.

Recommended activities: Driving is the most convenient; if not driving, consider joining a day tour or taking a bus + taxi.

Best season: Summer for the most beautiful sea views, winter (November-March) for indulging in plump oysters.

Where is Itoshima? A coastal town boasting Fukuoka’s seamless sea and sky.

As Kyushu’s largest city, when mentioning Fukuoka travel, people might think of the bustling Hakata and Tenjin city centers, the historic Dazaifu, or the water town Yanagawa… all classic and endlessly enjoyable Fukuoka experiences.

However, located in western Fukuoka, Itoshima offers unbeatable sunsets and stunning sea views, making it a popular Fukuoka destination in recent years.

How to enjoy Itoshima?

Find a seaside restaurant or café to spend an afternoon, gazing at the azure coastline outside the window; or wander aimlessly in this coastal town, soaking in the seaside charm; or capture the moment with a camera or phone, storing this sea in your memory.

For travelers, Itoshima offers various leisurely travel experiences, and the beautiful photos and reviews online are the reasons I long to visit here.

How to get to Itoshima?

Located about a 40-minute drive from Fukuoka City, getting to Itoshima is not complicated, with three main options: bus or taxi, self-driving, and chartered car.

During our Kyushu trip, since we were traveling with elders and a baby, we rented a car for the entire five days, including our visit to Itoshima. However, we’ve compiled the transportation options to Itoshima for everyone.

🚄 Hakata/Tenjin to Itoshima: A Complete Analysis of 3 Transportation Methods

Traveling from the center of Fukuoka City (Hakata Station, Tenjin Station) to Itoshima is very convenient, with a travel time of about 40-50 minutes. Here is a comparison of the three most popular transportation methods:

1. By Train (Most Punctual, Suitable for Taxi/Bike Transfers)

Fukuoka City Subway and JR Chikuhi Line offer “direct services,” meaning you don’t need to change platforms and can go directly from Hakata to Itoshima!

  • Route: Take the [Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line (towards Nishi-Karatsu/Chikuzen-Maebaru)] from “Hakata Station” or “Tenjin Station.”
  • Stations to Alight:
    • Chikuzen-Maebaru Station: The transportation hub of Itoshima, with many buses, taxis, and bike rental places available here.
    • Kyudai-Gakken-Toshi Station: If you plan to take a bus to “Futamigaura Couple Rocks,” it’s recommended to alight and transfer here.
  • Time/Fare: Approximately 40 minutes / One-way about 580 yen.

2. By Express Bus “West Coast Liner” (Tourists’ Top Choice! Direct to Attractions)

This has become the most popular new option in recent years! No need to worry about missing connections between trains and buses, as it takes you directly from Hakata city center to the scenic spots.

  • Route: Take the Showa Bus [West Coast Liner] from “Hakata Bus Terminal” or “Tenjin”.
  • Stops: The route includes popular stops like Marine Fishing Park, Meoto Iwa (Futamigaura), and Palm Tree Swing.
  • Advantages: No need to transfer, and you’ll arrive right at the white torii gate!
  • Schedule: About one bus per hour on weekdays, with more frequent services on holidays (check the Showa Bus website for the timetable in advance).

3. Car Rental (Most freedom, explore hidden spots)

If you want to try “Sea Salt Pudding (Mataichi no Shio)” or go further to “Mt. Tateishi”, driving is your only option.

  • Route: From Hakata/Tenjin, take the “Fukuoka Urban Expressway Loop Line”, connect to the “Nishi-Kyushu Expressway”, and exit at “Imatsu IC” or “Maebaru IC”.
  • Navigation Settings: It’s recommended to enter the MapCode or phone number of the destination directly for more accuracy than using the address.
  • Parking: Most attractions in Itoshima (like Meoto Iwa and various cafes) offer free or paid parking, making it very convenient.

Itoshima Map and Attraction Route Planning

Itoshima covers an area of 215.7 square kilometers. Starting from the JR station, there are many cafes and unique restaurants nearby. At the top, you can enjoy the view from Natazan Observatory overlooking Genkai Island, visit the popular White Torii, the dreamy Totoro Forest, and various art installations and displays along the way.

Itoshima covers an area of about 215 square kilometers, with many attractions concentrated along the northern coastline. We arrived in the afternoon, and our itinerary was as follows: Depart from Fukuoka City ➝ Ocean House for a seaside lunch ➝ Sakurai Futamigaura Couple Rocks (White Torii) ➝ Mataichi Salt (Sea Salt Pudding) ➝ Return to Fukuoka

Must-visit attraction one: Ocean House, the pure white container restaurant

Our first stop was the highly popular scenic restaurant on Xiaohongshu, Ocean House. The pure white two-story building stands in the first row by the sea, offering an awe-inspiring, unbeatable ocean view.

In addition to the main building, there are many rest areas outside where you can sit and enjoy the sea view.

Although it’s early summer, the weather in Itoshima is very pleasant. With our baby, we immediately stepped into the building to enjoy the air conditioning XD

Inside Ocean House, the decor features white with plenty of wood, creating a simple yet comfortable atmosphere. The best seats are those facing the sea, where you can enjoy the view while savoring delicious food.

The clear skies and the distant mountains with the gradient-colored ocean create an exhilarating view, truly a breathtaking scenery.

We ordered a steak set, a pizza, and three fried oysters. Itoshima oysters are a local delicacy in Itoshima. From November to the end of March, during the “Itoshima Oyster Season“, you can enjoy fresh oysters at affordable prices.

Although it wasn’t the peak season when we visited, the freshly fried oysters were still fresh and delicious.

The steak set includes a cold soup and salad. The steak was tender and flavorful, and it tasted great with just a simple sprinkle of rose salt.

Besides the indoor space, Ocean House also features an outdoor viewing deck where you can dine in the evening and enjoy the gentle sea breeze.

Up close, the waters of Itoshima are crystal clear and sparkle under the sunlight.

We asked the staff to take a few group photos on the outdoor viewing deck, marking the first beautiful memory of this family trip.

Must-visit Spot 2: Mataichi no Shio (Handmade Salt Pudding)

After finishing the main course, the second stop was the long-awaited destination for this pudding lover — enjoying Itoshima Pudding!

This was also the part of the trip I was most looking forward to! Mataichi no Shio (Mataichi no Shio) is located at the westernmost point of the Itoshima Peninsula and is a workshop that insists on using traditional three-dimensional salt fields for salt production.

I previously saw other travelers share online that the handmade flower salt pudding at the saltworks is incredibly delicious. Although the journey is a bit far, reaching the coastal road at the extreme west of Itoshima, the vast ocean outside makes it feel like a secret adventure.

Mataichi Salt is an old salt factory in Itoshima, housed in a vintage Japanese-style building that exudes charm.

It takes about a five-minute walk from the parking lot to get here. An afternoon stroll is quite pleasant, as the sea breeze makes it an enjoyable time to walk with family.

At the end of the path, you’ll see many tourists, some gazing at the sea, others taking photos, each becoming part of the picturesque scenery of this corner bay.

Next to Mataichi Salt Workshop, the Shin Saburo Store not only sells puddings but also offers drinks and various sea salt products.

I found online that there are three flavors of sea salt pudding (chocolate, caramel, and original).

I had planned to try all three flavors, but unfortunately, I arrived too late and only the original was left to buy.

The Itoshima Flower Salt Pudding is served in small glass jars, lined up on a wooden bench by the sea, creating an adorable scene.

The handmade sea salt pudding is smooth and sweet, and the addition of sea salt adds a savory-sweet taste that enhances the texture with more layers.

Besides pudding, we also bought the iced yuzu tea here, a refreshing citrus-flavored drink perfect for summer.

After finishing the pudding, we were reluctant to leave and took many photos in this small pavilion.

I particularly like this photo above, capturing the backs of my grandmother, mother, sister, and niece looking at the sea, evoking a sense of tranquility and peace.

Our first rare four-generation family trip was exhausting, but looking back at the photos, I feel, “It’s wonderful that we could travel together!”

Must-visit Spot Three: Sakurai Futamigaura Couple Rocks (White Torii on the Water)

Our final stop was the must-visit spot in ItoshimaSakurai Futamigaura Couple Rocks.

This is everyone’s first impression of Itoshima and can be considered its landmark! Sakurai Futamigaura has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Japanese Beaches” and “Top 100 Japanese Sunsets”.

The afternoon sun was pleasantly comfortable, making the sea even more vividly blue. The white torii standing on the sea looked incredibly dreamy, making it hard to stop taking photos.

We parked the car in the parking lot across the street, and it only took two minutes to walk to the beach. The parking arrangements here are well done, with at least 3-4 parking spots available.

Even though it was a weekday, there were already quite a few tourists by the beach, showing the popularity of the white torii.

The path to the coast isn’t long, but you have to navigate stairs, large rocks, and streams, so extra care is needed if you’re with children and elders.

Sakurai Futamigaura Couple Rocks are two large seaside rocks connected by a giant sacred rope, symbolizing a couple gazing at each other, firmly together. This is why many couples visit here to pray for lasting relationships.

I used different angles to capture the scene here. Compared to the commonly seen red torii gates, the pure white torii gate on the water looks even more romantic. Perhaps it’s because it frames the Meoto Iwa rocks in the background, creating a serene and beautiful view.

We dressed little Lemon in a new dress and sun hat we bought, letting her sit on the beach. Watching her curiously grab the sand around her, it seemed like everything new was incredibly fresh and interesting to her.
