This guide is tailored for pudding lovers, photography enthusiasts, and family travelers planning a Fukuoka road trip. Experience the secret spot at the westernmost tip of the Itoshima Peninsula, “Mataichi no Shio Salt Factory,” and step into a world of sweet and salty flavors crafted by traditional salt field methods. Be sure to arrive before 3 PM to avoid missing out on the popular caramel and chocolate flavors.
After dining at a seaside restaurant in Itoshima, my next highly anticipated stop as a “pudding person” was to enjoy Itoshima Pudding! This was also the highlight I looked forward to the most during my Fukuoka Itoshima trip.

Located at the westernmost tip of the Itoshima Peninsula, “Mataichi no Shio” is not only a workshop dedicated to traditional three-dimensional salt field production but also a place that captivates travelers with its delicious offerings.
We headed there in the afternoon after lunch. Although the journey was a bit long, requiring us to drive along coastal roads, the vast blue ocean accompanying us made it feel like an exciting secret adventure.

Must-Try Itoshima Delicacy: Why is Mataichi no Shio’s Salted Pudding So Popular?
Mataichi no Shio is a long-established salt factory in Itoshima, housed in a vintage Japanese wooden building full of character.

It takes about a 5-minute walk from the parking lot to the workshop.

Strolling in the afternoon is not tiring; rather, the sea breeze makes the time spent walking with family enjoyable.

At the end of the path, you can see many tourists resting by the sea, some watching the ocean, some taking photos, each becoming a beautiful part of the bay’s scenery.
Itoshima Pudding Review: A Surprise of Sweet and Salty Flavors
Next to the workshop, “Shinsaburo Store” sells not only the famous pudding but also drinks and various products made from pure sea salt.

Originally, I planned to collect all three pudding flavors (chocolate, caramel, original) at once, but unfortunately, we arrived too late, and only the original flavor was left.

The Itoshima Salted Pudding is served in small glass jars, lined up on a wooden bench by the sea, creating a very cute scene.
The handmade pudding is smooth and sweet, with the addition of sea salt giving it a unique sweet and salty taste that elevates the flavor profile.

We also bought the Yuzu Iced Tea here, with its refreshing citrus flavor perfectly balancing the sweetness of the pudding, making it ideal for summer.
Precious Memories with Four Generations
After finishing the pudding, we were reluctant to leave and took many photos in the pavilion.
I took a photo of my grandmother, mother, sister, and niece looking at the sea from behind, which is one of my favorite images from this trip.

This was my first rare “four-generation family trip”.
Although traveling with elders and children can be tiring, looking back at the photos, I still think: “It’s wonderful to travel with the whole family!”
This combination of “scenery, food, and family” in a hidden gem is what makes Itoshima so charming.

The attraction is located at the westernmost tip of Itoshima, and it’s recommended to drive for convenience. Navigate to “Mataichi no Shio Salt Factory,” and it’s about a 5-minute walk from the parking lot.
It’s best to arrive before noon or by 2 PM. Since the pudding is handmade daily in limited quantities, popular flavors (like caramel or seasonal specials) often sell out before evening.
Highly recommend purchasing their “handmade sea salt”. They adhere to traditional methods, and the sea salt granules are full and sweet, making it the best choice for cooking or gifting.
