Visit Fukuoka’s Itoshima’s most iconic landmark, “Sakurai Futamigaura,” between 2 to 4 PM to capture the purest contrast of blue and white, while perfectly avoiding the evening crowds.
On the last stop of our Fukuoka Itoshima self-drive tour, we headed to the most famous landmark in Itoshima—Sakurai Futamigaura Meoto Iwa, also known for its iconic white torii gate over the water.

Sakurai Futamigaura has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Japanese Coasts” and “Top 100 Sunset Spots in Japan.” The pure white torii standing on the azure sea surface, intertwined with the Meoto Iwa rocks behind, creates a breathtaking scene.

On-Site Visit: The Romantic Legend of the White Torii and Meoto Iwa
We visited as the last stop of our Itoshima day tour, arriving around 5:30 PM.

The afternoon sunlight was pleasant and comfortable, casting a glow on the sea, making the water appear even more azure.
Compared to the commonly seen red torii in Japan, this pure white torii over the water exudes a more romantic and serene vibe.

Looking from the center of the white torii, you can see two massive coastal rocks behind, connected by a large shimenawa rope, known as “Meoto Iwa.”
They appear like a couple gazing at each other, steadfastly together, making this a sacred place for many couples or married pairs to pray for lasting love and a happy marriage.
Best Time for Photography
Although Sakurai Futamigaura is selected as a “Top 100 Sunset Spot,” if you’re visiting with elders and children like us, 2 PM to 4 PM is actually a more recommended time.
- Blue skies and white clouds are also captivating: The afternoon light perfectly illuminates the white torii, paired with Itoshima’s azure sea, creating a pure and beautiful contrast of white and blue.
- More relaxed itinerary: Avoid the sunset crowds, take photos without long waits, and still have time to return to the city for dinner.
Itoshima Attraction Test: Tips for Visiting with Elders and Children

We visited on a weekday in June, and even before sunset, the shore was quite crowded, showing the popularity of the white torii.
Although the path to the coast isn’t long, you have to walk over stairs, large rocks, and small streams.
If you’re visiting with children or elders, be sure to pay extra attention to safety to avoid slipping on wet rocks.

You can try taking photos from different angles here, especially framing the Meoto Iwa rocks within the white torii’s frame, creating a very balanced image.

The sand here is of good quality, fine and clean.
We dressed our little Lemon in a new dress and sunhat, letting her sit on the beach.
Watching her curiously grab the sand around her, filled with curiosity about new things, added a touch of warmth to this trip (I think this was her first time touching sand!)
Because we were with elders and children, we left before the most beautiful sunset moment, feeling a tiny bit regretful. But as long as we’re together with family, enjoying this scenery, that’s what matters most!

The parking is well-organized here. There are about 3-4 different parking areas across from the attraction, and it’s only a 2-minute walk to the beach, making it very friendly for self-drive visitors.
If you want to capture the pure blue sea, the light is best from 2 PM to 4 PM; if you enjoy the orange-red afterglow, as a “Top 100 Sunset Spot”, the sunset is a golden moment not to be missed.
Although the parking lot is close to the beach, reaching the sandy area near the torii requires a short walk over stairs and rocks, so strollers are not recommended on the sand.
It’s advised to let elders take their time and enjoy the view from the flat area near the shore.
