This article is perfect for budget-conscious families who prefer self-driving trips and need to accommodate several family members in one room, known as the “budget family leader.” It reviews the GRAND BASE Hakataminami (Hakata South) located outside Hakata Station, testing how three large beds can accommodate five people, and compares the space and functionality differences with its sister hotel “Fukuoka Sumiyoshi.”
Traveling abroad with both elders and children feels like a challenge: you need an elevator, a comfortable bed, a microwave for fresh milk, laundry facilities, and ideally a place to cook, all without breaking the bank (spent too much at Yufuin earlier ><).

This time, our family of five (me, mom, grandma, sister, and 3-year-old niece) came to Fukuoka. Since we booked too late, we missed out on the very satisfying Grand Base Fukuoka Sumiyoshi from our last stay, so we opted for its sister hotel GRAND BASE Hakataminami (Hakata South Base Hotel).
This article will use our two-night experience to clearly tell you: Is it suitable for families and how does it differ from its sister hotel Grand Base Fukuoka Sumiyoshi?
- A blessing for self-drivers: a bit further from Hakata Station means cheaper parking fees
- Six-person room test: Three large beds are great, but the space is cramped, so be prepared.
- The perfect companion for traveling with elders and children: Kitchen + Washing Machine + Bathroom Dryer
- Grand Base Hakataminami vs Fukuoka Sumiyoshi: What’s the difference?

A blessing for self-drivers: a bit further from Hakata Station means cheaper parking fees
Let’s start with the practical: this place is about a 15–20 minute walk from “Hakata Station.”
If you’re a family using public transportation (pushing strollers, dragging suitcases, and looking after elders), I think it’s very unsuitable.
But since we were driving this time, the distance became a non-issue, and we enjoyed two benefits:
Parking fees are very cheap
There are many coin-operated parking lots around the hotel, and we parked for about 900 yen per night.
Compared to the exorbitant parking fees we just paid in Tenjin, this is incredibly affordable! Plus, it’s only a two-minute walk, with plenty of spaces available.
Convenience store just 1 minute away
There’s a FamilyMart just a minute’s walk away.
Families with children know that having a place nearby to buy milk (to microwave for a night drink), snacks, or something to eat when hunger strikes at night is fantastic.
Six-person room test: Three large beds are great, but the space is cramped, so be prepared.
The GRAND BASE series follows a self-check-in/check-out approach. Although entering information during check-in can be cumbersome, the advantage is that there are no restrictions on check-in times.

There’s an elevator, so the elderly don’t have to climb stairs, and you don’t have to carry luggage, which is very important for family travel (although we stayed on the first floor this time).
Upon entering the room, you’ll first see: three large double beds neatly arranged. What I dislike the most is the blue bedspread XD, which looks very gloomy. Clearly, another room at Grand Base Fukuoka Sumiyoshi had clean white bedspreads.
There’s plenty of sleeping space.
The five of us slept on three large beds. Grandma, being a light sleeper, had a bed to herself, so she didn’t have to share with others, and turning over wouldn’t disturb her.
The beds are quite comfortable, with a medium firmness.
Activity space is limited.
I have to be honest: After placing the beds and sofa with a coffee table, the walkway space becomes very precious.

If you want to open 4 suitcases at the same time, you’ll need to adjust positions, take turns, or open them halfway. It got a bit chaotic when we were packing on the last day.

In this small space, there’s also a desk, which was useful, but it made the space even smaller.
The living room area is perfect for lounging.
Opposite the beds is a set of black leather sofas with a glass coffee table and a large TV.

After showering at night, everyone enjoys snacks and midnight snacks. Family travel needs this kind of lounging corner.
The perfect companion for traveling with elders and children: Kitchen + Washing Machine + Bathroom Dryer
What I love most about GRAND BASE isn’t actually the bed, but its apartment-style setup: small yet fully equipped.
Washing machine + bathroom dryer are major bonuses

The washing machine is right next to the bathroom, with its own private unit, no coin operation needed, making it perfect for families.
We did laundry two days in a row: washed, hung in the bathroom, turned on the drying function, and it was dry by the next morning.
For families with young children, it’s incredibly convenient!
The kitchenette is fully equipped

The kitchen area is right by the entrance hallway: medium-sized fridge, microwave, electric kettle, IH stove are all available, with basic pots and pans in the cabinets.
On our last day, after packing our luggage late at night and not wanting to go out, we just made instant noodles here.
Grand Base Hakataminami vs Fukuoka Sumiyoshi: What’s the difference?
Having previously stayed at the sister hotel of the same group, Grand Base Hakata Sumiyoshi (Fukuoka Sumiyoshi), both are standard six-person rooms with similar setups, so I’ll share the differences from my firsthand experience.

| Comparison Items | Hakataminami (Hakata Minami) | Sumiyoshi (Fukuoka Sumiyoshi) |
|---|---|---|
| Location | About a 15–20 minute walk from the station | Also a 15-minute walk but the surrounding area is slightly better equipped (with a 24-hour supermarket) |
| Space Size | A bit cramped, need to adjust luggage placement | Much larger, more spacious and comfortable |
| Decor Style | Standard, business apartment feel | Stronger design sense, more beautiful |
| Price | About NT$6,536 for 2 nights | Slightly more expensive (but the price difference isn’t significant) |
Booking suggestion: It’s recommended to book in advance.
GRAND BASE series hotels often get fully booked on popular dates, especially if you’re looking for a room for 6 people, wanting to stay in the same room, it’s even easier to miss out.
We booked too late this time, which is why we missed out on staying at the Sumiyoshi location we wanted more.
If you are:
- Planning to visit Fukuoka during holidays/cherry blossom season/summer vacation
- On a family trip needing the same room (not wanting to split into two rooms)
- Having a packed schedule and don’t want to find out there’s no room upon arrival
Then I would suggest booking online in advance, and it’s more reassuring to choose a room type that can be canceled.

Summary: Who is this place suitable for?

GRAND BASE Hakataminami is not a hotel with a strong design or resort feel, but it is a very nice apartment-style hotel.
It’s a bit far from the station and the rooms are somewhat cramped, but the price is affordable. With a kitchen, washing machine, and living room, I think it’s really cost-effective for families traveling by car.
- If you want a more spacious, aesthetically pleasing place with better functionality → prioritize booking Grand Base Fukuoka Sumiyoshi (but book early, as I think it’s quite popular).
- If you book late, have budget constraints, or are primarily driving and looking for a high-value place to stay → Hakataminami is a good choice, basically no pitfalls.

Accommodation Recommendation in Hakata Minami, Fukuoka
GRAND BASE Hakataminami Apartment Hotel
Suitable, provided you don’t seek a large space. Three large beds are very family-friendly, plus there’s a washing machine and bathroom dryer.
I think it would. Google Maps shows about 15–20 minutes, but with a stroller and suitcase, it might take longer. If you’re not driving, consider evaluating your itinerary.
There are many coin-operated parking lots around the hotel. We found it costs about 900 yen per night.
The activity space is relatively small. You might need to open halfway or take turns.
