Must-know! 7 Important Tips for Booking Accommodation in Los Angeles

Besides choosing an area, after actually staying, we found many ‘unspoken rules’ different from Taiwan that you must know before booking:

💰Costs and Tips

  1. Room Rate Traps: The prices shown on booking websites usually exclude taxes (about 14-16%) and resort fees. You might be surprised at checkout, so it’s recommended to select “show total price.”
  2. Parking Fees Shock: Downtown hotel parking can cost $30-$60 per night! Be sure to check parking fees before booking, or find suburban hotels offering “free parking in Los Angeles”.
  3. Tip for Housekeeping: If staying multiple nights and using housekeeping services, it’s recommended to leave a tip of $2-$5 on the bedside table each day.

🛁 Amenities and Habits

  1. No Kettle: Americans are accustomed to drinking cold water, and rooms usually only have a coffee maker. If you want hot water, you can use the coffee maker or ask for hot water in the lobby (it’s really tough for Asians XD).
  2. No Toothbrush Provided: For environmental reasons (or perhaps cost-saving?), most hotels do not provide toothbrushes or toothpaste, so be sure to bring your own!
  3. Breakfast Costs Extra: Except for chain brands like Holiday Inn Express, most American hotels charge extra for breakfast, and the options are usually limited to bread, bacon, and scrambled eggs.
  4. 24-Hour Front Desk: For security reasons, it’s strongly recommended to choose hotels with a 24-hour security/front desk so there’s someone to assist in emergencies.

Los Angeles Accommodation Safety – Recommended Areas for Staying in Los Angeles

When planning a trip, besides having fun and enjoyment, safety is undoubtedly the most important consideration.

洛杉磯治安問題

Los Angeles Safety is often perceived as relatively poor, so the safety around accommodations is a major concern for travelers. On this trip, since there were only two of us traveling together, we were more stringent about the security of the area around our accommodations.

To enhance safety, we chose accommodations by considering the surrounding environment, opting for areas with relatively better security to avoid unnecessary risks.

1. What are the accommodation areas in Los Angeles? Los Angeles Accommodation Map

Los Angeles is a diverse city with many different accommodation blocks to choose from. Our trip covered several major accommodation areas, including Los Angeles International Airport, Koreatown, and Ontario Airport. Each of these areas has its own unique characteristics, offering travelers a variety of accommodation options.

To make it easier for everyone to find suitable accommodations, I have compiled a Los Angeles Accommodation Map for reference, hoping it will be helpful to everyone!

洛杉磯住宿地圖
  • Los Angeles Airport Area: Close to Los Angeles International Airport, this area offers many high-quality hotel options, most of which provide free airport shuttle services, making it very convenient for travelers with early or late flights. The area has a wide range of hotel choices, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly accommodations, mostly surrounded by commercial areas or near the airport, lacking tourist attractions.
  • Koreatown: A Korean community featuring many Korean hotels and restaurants with unique flavors and diverse cultures. There is a wide variety of hotel options, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly accommodations, and plenty of restaurants and shopping centers. However, traffic in the area is congested, and some places may not be particularly safe, so personal safety should be a priority.
  • Hollywood Area: Located in downtown Los Angeles, close to famous Hollywood attractions such as the Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Hollywood Museum. It offers convenient transportation, not only near famous Hollywood attractions but also close to downtown Los Angeles commercial areas, shopping centers, and restaurants. However, accommodation prices are higher, traffic is congested, and security issues may be more serious.
  • Downtown Los Angeles: Situated in the heart of Los Angeles, it boasts a prime location with convenient transportation and a wide range of accommodation options, including upscale hotels and apartment-style lodgings. The area is densely populated and traffic is congested, and besides the relatively poor security, which requires attention to safety, parking issues should also be considered in advance.
  • Ontario Airport Area: Located on the east side of Los Angeles, about a 10-minute drive from Ontario Los Angeles Airport, this area has fewer accommodation options, mainly chain hotels, but prices are relatively affordable, making it a good choice for budget accommodations. However, the location is relatively remote, and transportation convenience is somewhat lacking, requiring a vehicle for easy travel, with relatively good security and higher safety.
  • Beverly Hills: One of the most luxurious areas in Los Angeles, offering luxurious and upscale accommodation facilities, including many five-star hotels and resorts. The area boasts beautiful scenery, with stunning mountain views and city nightscapes visible from the rooms. However, accommodation costs are significantly higher, making it less suitable for budget-conscious travelers.

Accommodation and Parking Issues in Los Angeles

Besides the potential safety concerns when walking at night in Los Angeles, car break-ins in Los Angeles are also not uncommon!

Parking on the street carries a significant risk, as local friends have experienced smashed car windows firsthand.

Therefore, when looking for accommodation in Los Angeles, it’s recommended to choose hotels with parking lots.

Of course, free parking is even better, as in the pricey real estate of LA, hotel parking can cost as much as $20 to $30 per night.

Safety and Convenience – Hotel Security and 24-Hour Reception

Choosing a hotel with a 24-hour reception desk allows you to enjoy your trip with greater peace of mind.

Accommodation Costs in Los Angeles

Besides considering safety, cost is also an important factor when choosing accommodation.

When checking room rates, pay attention to the differences in pre-tax or service fee amounts. If staying in Los Angeles for more than a day, tipping is also required.

For budget-conscious travelers, options like hostels or backpacker inns offer relatively cheaper accommodations, but safety should be a concern. If you wish to enjoy a more luxurious stay, it’s best to plan your budget in advance.

4. Price Display Issues on Booking Websites

Accurate room rate inquiries can save you time and money on comparisons, especially since booking websites often display prices excluding taxes and service fees by default.

Therefore, it’s recommended to change the option to ‘total cost’ when comparing prices to avoid spending too much time on price comparisons. When booking, also be aware of any hidden fees, such as parking fees, breakfast charges, etc.

5. Tipping for Housekeeping in Los Angeles

The U.S. has a strong tipping culture, with habits of tipping service staff in dining, accommodation, and other settings. If staying at the same hotel for more than a day and using housekeeping services, it’s recommended to leave a $6-10 tip on the bedside table as a gesture of gratitude.

Accommodation Facilities in Los Angeles

When staying in Los Angeles, you may find facilities and amenities different from those in Taiwanese hotels. For example, most hotels do not provide certain disposable items, so you need to bring your own or request them at the front desk.

In addition, most accommodations in Los Angeles do not offer free breakfast, requiring an additional fee, and the breakfast options are relatively limited.

Some hotels in Los Angeles provide self-service laundry facilities, allowing guests to wash their clothes in the hotel, which is quite convenient for long-term travelers. Some hotels also have leisure facilities such as gyms and swimming pools, allowing travelers to enjoy some relaxation and leisure time amidst their busy schedules.

6. Not used to hotels not having a kettle

When staying in the United States, I found that American hotels do not provide kettles, which is very different from hotels in Taiwan!

It might be because people in Western countries are not fond of drinking hot water; they prefer cold drinks (even having a cold beer in the morning!), which is a noticeable difference from Asian dietary habits, leading to some inconvenience.

For Asians who are accustomed to drinking warm water or making tea, it can be quite uncomfortable.

If you really need hot water, some hotels offer room service where you can request hot water from the staff, but there might be an extra charge. During my stay, I used the coffee machine to boil water or asked for hot water when buying Starbucks.

Overall, for Asian travelers accustomed to drinking hot water or making tea, this can be an unfamiliar environment.

7. No toothbrush provided

When traveling in the United States, it’s essential to bring some basic personal hygiene products to avoid having to go to the supermarket or pharmacy for necessities after arriving at your accommodation.

Although we now travel with our own electric toothbrushes, it’s a bit surprising that American hotels do not provide toothbrushes XD

It’s not that they don’t provide any disposable amenities, it’s just that they don’t provide toothbrushes, which feels like an incomplete effort towards environmental friendliness.

Some hotels still offer individually packaged shower gel (some are in bottles), but there won’t be any toothbrushes, so remember to bring your own when traveling to the United States!

Accommodation Experience in Los Angeles

I hope this article helps everyone better understand the accommodation situation in Los Angeles and the considerations when choosing a place to stay.

Although accommodations in Los Angeles might be relatively expensive compared to other cities, once you find the right place, you can comfortably experience the unique charm of the city. If you plan to travel to Los Angeles, feel free to refer to the information provided in this article, and you’re sure to find accommodation that suits you.
