Although the travel time has shortened, there are still a variety of transportation options: from buses costing a few hundred to seaplanes costing tens of thousands. How to choose? This guide will break down the prices, times, and pros and cons of 5 different transportation methods for you.

It is strongly recommended to add on a luxury minibus from the cruise company or book a private car, directly to the pier, avoiding the language barrier of transferring buses. This time, we purchased the shuttle service directly from the cruise company when booking the boat. Honestly, it was more expensive, but we hadn’t done our homework well. However, the overall experience was quite good.

2. Private Car

If you’re traveling with children, seniors, or have a group of 3-4 people, renting a private car is actually very cost-effective.
Cost: A one-way trip in a seven-seater van costs about 2,300,000 – 4,000,000 VND (approximately NT$ 3,000 – 5,200).
Advantages:
- Flexibility: You decide when to depart, without having to accommodate other passengers and detour to pick them up.
- Comfort: Rest whenever you’re tired, and stop at rest areas whenever you need to use the restroom.
- Direct: Direct transport from your hotel in Hanoi to the Ha Long Bay pier.

3. Local Bus
👉 Budget Choice: Cheapest but Most Exhausting
If you want to save money to the extreme, taking the bus is currently the cheapest way to get to Ha Long Bay.
However, please note that buses from Hanoi to other provinces mostly depart from My Dinh Bus Station, which is a bit far from the Old Quarter.

- Type: Large Bus Station
- Location: About 11 km from Hanoi Old Quarter
- Feature: It is the main bus station connecting Hanoi with the northern and northwestern provinces.
- Cost: 80,000 – 240,000 VND (depending on the type of bus).
- Schedule: Every half hour, with a travel time of about 3.5 – 4 hours.
- Drawback: After arriving at Ha Long Bay Bus Station, you still need to take a taxi to the pier (which could be an additional cost), so it doesn’t save much money, but it does take twice the time.
4. Seaplane
👉 Luxury Perspective: A bird’s-eye view of the World Heritage Site
This is the coolest and most luxurious mode of transportation! Fly directly from Hanoi Noi Bai Airport to Ha Long Bay in less than an hour.

- Highlights: Besides being fast, the main attraction is the breathtaking aerial view of the thousands of islands scattered across the sea, offering a perspective completely different from the view on a boat. Ideal for travelers with a generous budget or those on a honeymoon.
- Drawback: Expensive! But the cost isn’t the plane’s fault… it’s mine.
Avoid traffic jams and cut down travel time, reaching the destination in less than an hour, with the added bonus of a direct aerial view of the entire Halong Bay.
Perfect for travelers with extra budget who want to create special memories. If you’re honeymooning in Halong Bay, flying there is a luxurious and excellent option.

5. Rent a Motorbike
👉 Thrill-seeking Riders: The Most Local Adventure
- Cost: Renting a bike costs about 120,000 – 180,000 VND per day.
- Time: 4 – 5 hours (motorbikes cannot use highways, so you must take the old roads).
My Real Consideration: Honestly, before setting off, I really considered trying to ride a bike to Ha Long Bay! My previous experience renting a motorbike to tour around Bohol Island in the Philippines was fantastic, and I found riding in a foreign country to be incredibly liberating and fun.
But in the end, I gave up for two reasons:
- Road Conditions and Safety: Vietnam is famous for its chaotic traffic, and the long distance would be very exhausting for a long ride.
- Pressure to Catch the Boat: The cruise departure time is fixed (usually at 12:00 noon). If you get lost or the bike breaks down, missing the boat would be a huge loss (a few thousand dollars’ worth of tickets down the drain).
So, unless you are a seasoned driver with plenty of time, it’s recommended to take the bus to ensure you catch the boat smoothly!

Although it’s the cheapest, the 3-hour long journey is extremely exhausting. Vietnam’s traffic conditions are complex, motorcycles are highly dangerous; bus transfers are cumbersome and there’s a language barrier, so those seeking a quality travel experience should think twice.
