This article is perfect for travelers who are enchanted by Northern Vietnam’s “Halong Bay” but are undecided between the three major areas: Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay, and Bai Tu Long Bay. It provides an in-depth analysis of the attractions and vibrancy of each maritime region. For newcomers eager to pinpoint the perfect cruise route, this is the ultimate guide to ensure a quality travel experience.

How to choose a Halong Bay cruise route? When planning a trip to Halong Bay, you might quickly find yourself confused by the three bays. What exactly are the differences between “Halong Bay,” “Lan Ha Bay,” and “Bai Tu Long Bay”?

Many people, like me, might think Halong Bay is just one area, but in fact, this World Heritage maritime zone is composed of three interconnected bays.

Choosing the wrong route might lead you to situations where “the sea is full of boats,” “you want to swim but can’t get into the water,” or “the scenery is beautiful but too quiet.”

This guide will delve into the differences in attractions, level of activity, and suitable audiences of these three major bays, helping you choose the route that best suits you!

The Prologue

Overview of the Three Bays: Which Type of Traveler Are You?

AREA 01

Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay

The most well-known iconic World Heritage site. It boasts the largest scale of stalactite caves and classic landmarks, making it the absolute first choice for first-time visitors and families, lively and magnificent.

AREA 02

Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay

A serene hidden gem favored by Western travelers. With crystal-clear waters and moderate development, it perfectly balances convenience and tranquility, especially suitable for water enthusiasts and those seeking a leisurely vacation.

AREA 03

Bai Tu Long Bay

Bai Tu Long Bay

The ultimate remote escape from the hustle and bustle. The sea retains its most pristine and tranquil appearance from centuries ago, with almost no cluttered boats, ideal for deep travelers and reclusive souls.

Above is a simple map I created, with some famous attractions marked for reference when choosing boats and routes.

1. Ha Long Bay Route: A must-visit for first-timers! Surprise Cave and Hero Island are iconic classics.

👉 For those who love famous attractions: Surprise Cave and Hero Island, postcard-perfect scenes await you here.

This is the core area, the earliest developed and the most famous region.

Visitors come here for the towering limestone and stalactite caves. Sailing in this area feels like being among stone forests, earning it the nickname “Guilin on the Sea.”

下龍灣有「海上桂林」的稱號
Boats in Ha Long Bay feel like they are sailing through a stone forest.

The vast majority of “day tour” boats are concentrated here, making the sea very lively (sometimes even crowded with boats).

Must-see highlights:

  • Surprise Cave (Sung Sot Cave): The largest and most beautiful stalactite cave in Ha Long Bay. You need to climb about 100 steps to reach the entrance, and once inside, you’ll be awed by the magnificent space and the illuminated stalactites, truly making you exclaim “Wow!”
  • Hero Island (Ti Top Island): One of the few beaches in Ha Long Bay, but the highlight is “climbing.” After reaching the pavilion, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Ha Long Bay’s most classic promotional photo angle. The scenery is unbeatable, but so are the crowds.

Pros and Cons Analysis:

  • Pros: The most famous attractions, with the most spectacular stalactite cave resources.
  • Cons: Very crowded with tourists, popular spots often require queuing, and there’s a strong commercial atmosphere.

2. Lan Ha Bay Route: A favorite among Western tourists! A hidden paradise for kayaking and cycling.

👉 For those who love a vacation vibe: The Outdoor Paradise favored by Western tourists

蘭哈灣路線 (Lan Ha Bay):歐美客最愛!划獨木舟、騎腳踏車的度假秘境

Lan Ha Bay is located south of Ha Long Bay, and it has become very popular in recent years (many newly launched five-star cruises choose this route). Our three-day, two-night cruise also opted for Lan Ha Bay.

Lan Ha Bay boasts many secluded beaches.

Located in the southern part of the Ha Long Bay area, Lan Ha Bay is famous for its beautiful beaches. For tourists who love swimming, it’s easy to find scenery reminiscent of uninhabited islands.

Besides enjoying the sea views and water activities, Lan Ha Bay is also a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy bouldering, rock climbing, kayaking, and more.

The Lan Ha Bay route usually includes a visit to a small fishing village, where you can ride bicycles on the island and explore the life and history of local fishermen. I think it’s a wonderful experience.

Must-see highlights:

  • Dark & Bright Cave: This is where mountains meet the sea. The best experience is kayaking through the caves into a tranquil lagoon surrounded by cliffs.
  • Cat Ba Island and Viet Hai Village: Many tours include cycling here to explore the fishing village that preserves ancient lifestyles, weaving through tropical rainforests and karst landscapes, which is very relaxing.

Pros and Cons:

  • Pros: The water quality is cleaner than Ha Long Bay, with more beaches and areas where swimming is allowed. The atmosphere is leisurely, unlike the rushed itineraries of Ha Long Bay.
  • Cons: There are fewer famous large stalactite caves (if you’re someone who must see large stalactites, you might be disappointed).

Lan Ha Bay Travel Impressions

This time we chose the Lan Ha Bay route, and both Xiao Ding and I were extremely satisfied. There weren’t many people, the sea was clear and clean, and the cruise offered many water activities and visits to small villages. It was a perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and outdoor activities! Highly recommended.

3. Bai Tu Long Bay Route: A Pristine Bay Away from the Hustle and Bustle, the Top Choice for In-Depth Travel

👉 For the In-Depth Traveler: Enjoy the Serenity of the Entire Sea Area

Bai Tu Long Bay is the most remote bay, also known as “The Other Halong Bay” (The Other Halong Bay), and it remains a relatively untouched area.

This place still retains a very primitive appearance, making it the top choice for many high-end small cruises or travelers who value privacy.

Must-Visit Highlights:

  • Cong Dam Area: Known as the “Outdoor Geological Museum,” it boasts magnificent geological landscapes.
  • Cap La Island: Featuring pristine white sandy beaches, here you can witness the most authentic fisherman’s life with almost no other tourist boats in sight.

Pros and Cons Analysis:

  • Pros: Ultimate tranquility and privacy, as if you have the entire world heritage site to yourself.
  • Cons: Fewer boat options and lower site recognition, suitable for those who enjoy “purely watching the sea and unwinding.”

Conclusion: Which Halong Bay Route Should You Choose?

Still having trouble deciding after reading the introduction? Let me give you the final recommendation based on your “travel style”:

Route Selection Guide

The Three Major Routes of Halong Bay: Which One Suits You?

經典首選 帶著長輩、偏愛知名大景點

Choose the [Halong Bay Classic Route]. Elders often wish to witness the most famous landmarks (Surprise Cave, Hero Island), and this “been there, done that” ritual is indispensable. Although it can be crowded, the classic is classic for a reason, with its breathtaking beauty.

下龍灣、蘭哈灣、白土龍灣有什麼不同

Ha Long Bay is the core protected area, featuring the most spectacular stalactite caves but also the most tourists; Lan Ha Bay is located to the south, offering similar scenery but more tranquility, perfect for kayaking and water activities; Bai Tu Long Bay is to the east, the least developed and most pristine, ideal for travelers seeking to escape the crowds.

第一次去下龍灣,推薦選哪條路線?

If it’s your first visit or you’re traveling with elders, it’s recommended to choose the classic “Ha Long Bay Route”. Although it has more tourists, you can see the iconic Sung Sot Cave and climb Ti Top Island for a panoramic view, making it the most representative itinerary.

為什麼現在很多人推薦去蘭哈灣 (Lan Ha Bay)?

Due to the overcrowding in the core area of Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay is considered the “New Ha Long Bay,” with many newly launched luxury cruises opting for this route. The water here is cleaner, with more areas open for swimming, and you can experience cycling to visit fishing villages, offering a more “vacation” feel.

可以一次玩完三個海灣嗎?

Because the three bay areas are vast, limited by navigation rights and time, typical 2-day 1-night or 3-day 2-night itineraries usually focus on just one bay area. It’s recommended to confirm which route the cruise will take before departure.
