This article is perfect for travelers who are struggling with planning their Northern Vietnam itinerary and wondering whether to spend the night at sea. It analyzes the real differences between three durations in Ha Long Bay: a quick day trip, the classic two days and one night, and an in-depth three days and two nights. This guide helps you choose the right way to experience Ha Long Bay.
How to choose the duration for Ha Long Bay?
In travel groups or Google searches, ‘Ha Long Bay day trip’ is a popular keyword. However, as someone who just returned from Northern Vietnam, I went straight for the 3 days 2 nights on my first visit, and I was so grateful I could cry!
If you’re still torn between ‘same-day return’ or ‘overnight on the boat’, this article will directly break down the pros and cons of day trips, 2D1N, and 3D2N.
From Ha Long Bay transportation to route selection, I will tell you with the most authentic data: why staying an extra night is the correct way to truly escape the tourists and see the breathtaking world heritage scenery.

The following calculations are based on two people traveling together, as most cabins on the boat are ‘double rooms’. If a single person wants to stay, the cost will be higher.
Designed specifically for travelers with very limited time. After accounting for travel time, efficiently gather the most classic must-visit landmarks around the Ha Long Bay pier.
The most mainstream choice for the majority. The itinerary is compact and rich, just enough to experience the romance of falling asleep under the starlight at sea.
This is a true vacation in every sense. On the second day, switch to a small boat to explore undiscovered secret spots unreachable by larger vessels, and enjoy the ultimate slow life.
Halong Bay Day Tour: The Top Choice for Time Management Experts
While I personally find the overnight experience on the boat quite novel, just catching a glimpse of Halong Bay seems like a pity.
But if your holiday is short and you have other plans in Northern Vietnam, don’t worry! The “Halong Bay Day Tour” is definitely the most efficient choice.

With the highway between Hanoi and Ha Long City now complete, the Halong Bay day tour has become very popular! Many cruise companies even offer “Luxury Day Cruises.”
How can you make the trip more comfortable?
- Transportation: The first choice is to pair with a comfortable shuttle service. Since it’s a round trip in one day, you’ll spend 5-6 hours in transit, making it a great time to catch up on sleep.

- Itinerary: It is recommended to choose a 6-hour cruise (traditionally 4 hours), which gives you enough time to kayak, climb Hero Island, and even enjoy a high-quality buffet lunch.
My choice of thought:
If you decide to go for a day tour, my advice is: “Don’t skimp!” Since it’s a same-day round trip, be sure to choose better transportation and a better boat, so the journey doesn’t turn into a rushed mission.

Halong Bay Two Days One Night (2D1N): The Most Popular ‘Standard Itinerary’
This is the most common choice on the market and the ‘safe bet’ for most tourists.
Its advantage is that it’s ‘just right’: just right in budget, just right in experience (experience living on a boat), and just right to see the beauty of Halong Bay at different times (able to see both sunset and sunrise).

If you’re worried about getting bored spending three days at sea, or if your budget is tight, the two-day one-night Halong Bay trip is a flexible option.
The itinerary is roughly as follows:</strong>
- Day 1:</strong> Board the boat at noon ➝ Lunch ➝ Afternoon activities (kayaking/swimming) ➝ Dinner
- Day 2:</strong> Breakfast ➝ Morning activities (cave exploration) ➝ Check-out by 10:00 AM</strong>
The harsh reality is, you need to be prepared that the schedule will be a bit rushed</strong>: a 2-3 hour drive to the boarding point, half a day of activities, just getting used to the sway of the boat, just thinking ‘Wow! This place is beautiful.’ The next morning, after breakfast, you have to pack up and check out. Then it’s another 2-3 hour drive back to Hanoi.
But even so, spending a night at a World Heritage site, watching the sunset paint the sea red, is still an unforgettable memory</strong>.

Halong Bay Three Days Two Nights (3D2N): A True “Sea Vacation”
This is the option I chose this time, and it’s the one I highly recommend.
Although it was my first visit, I thought I might not return for a few years (after all, the journey is quite long), so I wanted to relax on the boat and fully experience the beauty of Halong Bay.
It turned out that this decision was the right one.
The main core difference: “Day Boat”
Because large cruise ships (mother ships) have a deep draft, they can’t enter very shallow or narrow waters.
So on the second day, the cruise company arranges a medium-sized “Day Boat” to shuttle 3D2N travelers.
This boat will take you deeper into the hidden gems of Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay:
1. Uninhabited Waters (Ba Trai Dao): Here, there are almost no day-trip tourists, allowing you to enjoy the entire sea area. Kayaking, diving, and sunbathing are all very pleasant here.

2. Visit Viet Hai Village: This is one of our favorite activities. A guide will lead us on a bike ride or golf cart tour around the island, introducing the village’s past and present life.
If you want to deeply understand the culture and lifestyle of Halong Bay, this is the best experience!

Why does 3D2N feel “worth it” to us?
- No packing: On the second morning, while watching 2D1N travelers busy packing and checking out, we could leisurely enjoy breakfast because we were staying another night.
- Profound tranquility: When the crowds leave and the day boat sails into uninhabited areas, the serene feeling of being alone with nature is a memorable part of my Halong Bay trip.
- Weather: It was rainy from the first day until the second day, but it cleared up by the afternoon of the second day, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful weather with blue skies and white clouds by staying an extra day.

Truth be told: Yes, it can be a bit rushed. Although there’s a highway now, reducing the one-way trip to 2.5 – 3 hours, the round trip still takes 5-6 hours. If you’re on a traditional 4-hour cruise, you’ll spend more time traveling than actually sightseeing.
This was my biggest concern before departure, but the result was completely the opposite!
On the second day, you’ll switch to a ‘Day Boat’ for exploration, moving from the mother ship to small islands, fishing villages, or deserted beaches, with plenty of activities like biking, swimming, and kayaking.
Plus, with activities like Happy Hour and cooking classes on board, time flies by, and you never feel ‘stuck on the boat.’
Yes, you can! Almost all Ha Long Bay (2D1N) itineraries include Surprise Cave and Titov Island. However, if you choose a Lan Ha Bay cruise, you’ll usually visit the ‘Dark & Bright Cave,’ which offers a different yet equally spectacular view.
Perfectly suitable! Ha Long Bay (including Lan Ha Bay) is an ‘inland sea,’ surrounded by thousands of islands, with waters as calm as a lake and almost no waves. Moreover, the overnight cruises are mostly large steel-hulled ships (weighing hundreds of tons), providing a very stable ride, so even the water in your glass barely moves.
Overnight Cruise (2D1N / 3D2N): Yes! You can bring your luggage on board, and the staff will deliver it to your room, so you don’t have to carry it yourself.
Day Tour: It’s not recommended to bring large luggage on board. It’s usually stored in the luggage compartment of the shuttle bus or at the pier’s waiting room, and you should only take your valuables on board.
Included: Accommodation, all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), itinerary activities (kayaking, tai chi, entrance fees).
Extra charges: Drinks and alcohol from the bar, spa massage services, tips.
