The intriguing culinary reality show – an introduction to Hell’s Kitchen

“It’s RAW!”
Even if you haven’t watched every season of “Hell’s Kitchen”, you’ve surely heard the iconic scenes of “Hell’s Chef” Gordon Ramsay yelling at contestants on the show.
Hell’s Kitchen is a famous American reality show, now in its 20th season, hosted by British chef Gordon Ramsay.
In the show, not only can you see contestants from various places showcasing their skills and engaging in dramatic antics in the kitchen, but the host Gordon, known as the “Hell’s Chef”, delivers sharp-tongued critiques that are a delight to watch, making it a highly popular and enduring show!
You can really taste the legendary Beef Wellington! Step into the real-life version of Hell’s Kitchen.
To allow fans to personally taste the dishes from the Hell’s Kitchen show, Gordon opened the world’s first Hell’s Kitchen in Las Vegas in 2017.

This restaurant, sharing the same name as the show, is a must-visit attraction for many people traveling to Las Vegas.
The restaurant offers classic dishes from the show, which will be familiar to those who have watched it. The interior features the same red and blue decor as the show’s teams, with 100% authenticity. Whether or not the food suits your taste, just seeing the real scene in front of you is truly moving!
Why choose the San Diego branch?
Although the world’s first Hell’s Kitchen opened in Las Vegas, we chose to visit the newly opened “San Diego branch” in August 2022, which is currently the largest branch.

Besides the fact that the popular Las Vegas Hell’s Kitchen is harder to book, our road trip had a shorter stay in Las Vegas (though we did visit Gordon’s Fish & Chips shop in Las Vegas).

The newly opened San Diego Hell’s Kitchen is located inside the Harrah’s Resort Southern California in North County San Diego. The restaurant offers 332 seats, making it perfect for solo diners, couples, friends, or family gatherings.

Since Harrah’s Resort itself is quite expansive, we got a bit lost before finding it.
If you have a reservation, make sure to arrive early. The restaurant is easiest to find from the resort’s ‘casino’ entrance because the restaurant is located inside the casino, marked by a very prominent HK Logo.
Restaurant Atmosphere: 100% authentic red and blue team showdown

As you enter the restaurant, you’re immediately greeted by a video of Gordon welcoming diners at the entrance.
On the right, there are some Hell’s Kitchen merchandise like mugs, clothes, etc. The most interesting item is a Gordon figurine XD, which is inexplicably a bit cute!
Of course, if you want to get closer to the show, why not buy a Hell’s Kitchen chef’s uniform to take home.

On the other wall at the entrance, there are photos of the champions from the past 20 seasons. The winners earn a permanent honor on this wall, while the unsuccessful challengers might be quietly forgotten. This kind of competition is truly ruthless!

However, the awkward part is… Taiwan’s Netflix Hell’s Kitchen has only aired up to season 19, and here they’ve already posted the season 20 champion, an unexpected spoiler XD.
Of course, as soon as you step into the restaurant, a fan’s DNA instantly kicks in!

This is not just a restaurant; it’s practically the show’s set.
The most eye-catching feature is the open kitchen design, which perfectly recreates the show’s “Red Team” and “Blue Team” setup.
Hell’s Kitchen dining process
After an exciting round of photos, we took our seats. The staff first presented the wine list to ask what we’d like to drink, and then we began ordering the main course.
The staff here are very friendly and chatty, just like on the show, making you feel as if you’re truly experiencing the program.

After ordering, I couldn’t resist picking up my phone to snap various photos, completely in fan mode!
Whether it’s on the menu, the back of the chairs, or the decorative patterns on the walls, you can see the Hell’s Kitchen logo everywhere. It’s really cool!

Our seats were located to the right, facing the kitchen, where we could see the classic red and blue team serving stations right in front of us!

Watching the chefs in their uniforms and headscarves busily working inside, it really felt like being in the show, with all the tense and exciting reality show vibes XD
The classic dishes are served! Is Hell’s Kitchen delicious?
Since we’re here, of course, we had to order the most classic combination.
I had already checked the menu from Taiwan and ordered a set meal (three courses for $99, including pan-seared scallops, Beef Wellington, and sticky toffee pudding), plus additional lobster risotto and caramel chocolate mousse, all signature dishes from the show.

Hell’s Kitchen Menu and Pricing
The complete menu and pricing can be found on the Hell’s Kitchen official website: San Diego Hell’s Kitchen Menu
Pan Seared Scallops
The first dish served is the pan seared scallops, a staple appetizer on the Hell’s Kitchen show. As soon as it’s served, you can immediately imagine how Gordon would react if the searing isn’t perfect (really gets you into the show XD).

The dish is presented on a matte black plate, and the plating is beautiful!

The scallops were seared to perfection that day, with a tender and juicy texture, and perfectly balanced seasoning.
The scallops were sprinkled with finely chopped celery root, paired with some aromatic bacon in the middle. I found this dish to be incredibly delicious!
Beef Wellington
Finally, I got to see it in person! The second dish served was the must-try Beef Wellington from Gordon’s Hell’s Kitchen.
Beef Wellington is an authentic royal British dish. The preparation involves searing the beef, wrapping it in puff pastry, brushing it with egg wash, and baking it in the oven. The process is much more intricate than that of a regular steak.
It is said to be a dish created by the royal chef for the Duke of Wellington’s victory banquet, which is also the origin of its name.

This was my first time trying Beef Wellington, and my first thought when it was served was, “It looks exactly like on the show!”
The steak, fresh out of the oven, was placed on a pure white plate. The outer puff pastry was baked to a perfect crisp, and the steak had a beautiful pink hue, cooked to perfection, with the aroma of the beef slowly unfolding as you take a bite.

The buttery aroma of the puff pastry and the tender filet mignon melted in the mouth, paired with the creamy mashed potatoes underneath, truly a “show-perfect recreation.”
Must-try add-on: Lobster Risotto
This dish was the biggest surprise of the day! It left an even more lasting impression on me than the Beef Wellington.

As soon as the risotto is served, the rich truffle aroma fills the air. Each grain of rice is infused with the essence of the broth, retaining the al dente texture of authentic Italian risotto without being too hard.
The lobster meat is fresh and bouncy; this dish is an absolute must-order.
Desserts: Sticky Toffee Pudding vs. Chocolate Mousse
Although we were already quite full after the main course, besides the set menu’s Sticky Toffee Pudding, we also ordered a Chocolate Mousse, because “desserts go to a different stomach.”
When the dishes arrived, we found the portions were huge, and we couldn’t finish them, completely overestimating our appetite.

Sticky Toffee Pudding is also a traditional British dessert, but compared to the pudding we imagined, it has more of a cake-like texture.
The cake is moist and drenched in rich toffee syrup, offering a delightful burst of flavor with every bite! The finishing touch is a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, which makes the cake less cloying and the taste more interesting.
The second dessert, Chocolate Mousse, is a “visual” dessert, a classic combination of ice cream and chocolate. The slightly bitter chocolate coating paired with rich vanilla ice cream makes for a delicious dessert that lifts your spirits and is a calorie bomb.
Fan insights! Hell’s Kitchen review
This time I visited Hell’s Kitchen, and many people on IG asked me if it was good. How was the Hell’s Kitchen experience?

I think it’s good, but not to the “wow!” level (my top steakhouse is still N°168 Prime Steakhouse). The dishes are above standard, and the staff are friendly and enthusiastic.
Food quality: Everything is above standard, especially the scallops and lobster risotto, which are exceptional.
Value for money: We dined as a pair, ordered quite a lot, and the bill including tip was about $200 USD (around $100 per person). Considering the “Hell’s Kitchen” brand, the exquisite decor, and service, this price is not expensive in the U.S.
Experience: Perfect score! From the merchandise store, chef’s attire to the red and blue kitchens, it fulfills all fans’ imaginations.
So whether you’re a fan of Hell’s Kitchen or not, I think it’s definitely worth a pilgrimage!
If you’re planning a trip to the Western U.S., whether you’re a die-hard Gordon Ramsay fan or just looking for a restaurant with a great atmosphere for a big meal, Hell’s Kitchen in San Diego will not disappoint.
