When talking about Hanoi performances, many people might first think of water puppetry. However, if you’re seeking a deeper Northern Vietnamese cultural experience, the large-scale live-action show recommended by CNN — The Quintessence of TONKIN (Hanoi Tonkin Show / Northern Vietnam Essence), is an unmissable Hanoi itinerary recommendation!
This is a visual feast that combines music, dance, culture, history, and top-notch sound and light technology.

This article is my 2023 Hanoi Tonkin Show viewing experience, including: performance tickets, shuttle packages, best seating area choices, and evaluations on whether the lesser-known performances are worth seeing. The entire performance lasts 1.5 hours, with no dull moments, leaving a deep impression!
Introduction: Why choose this lesser-known Northern Vietnamese performance?
I found this performance after seeing others share “Impression Hoi An” before departure, and was amazed that Vietnam also has such large-scale theatrical productions!
A quick search revealed that in the suburbs of Hanoi, Northern Vietnam, there is a similar performance, and it’s performed entirely on water, which piqued my strong interest.

However, this 《The Quintessence of TONKIN》, although reported by CNN and highly rated on major forums, has very few reviews, and Chinese introductions are rare. It doesn’t even have an official translated name (often referred to as Hanoi Tonkin Show or Northern Vietnam Essence).
These reasons made me a bit hesitant at first—”Should I really make time to see it?” After all, including the commute, it would take quite a bit of time.
Of course, in the end, curiosity got the better of me and I scheduled the trip (which is why this article exists).
To conclude, I found it absolutely spectacular!
If you enjoy exploring local culture during your travels, this performance will definitely not disappoint. The story, performance content, techniques, and audiovisuals are all a wonderful feast.
These reasons made me a bit hesitant at first, as including the commute, it would take quite a bit of time.
Northern Vietnam Essence Ticket Prices, Shuttle, and Booking Guide (Super Important)
Northern Vietnam Essence tickets can be purchased from the official website, with prices ranging from VND 800,000 to VND 1,200,000. However, you can get tickets for almost half the price on KKday, so it’s recommended to buy in advance for much better value.
🔥 Highly Recommended: Book “Tickets + Shuttle” Packages Online
We recommend booking through travel platforms! Tickets are cheaper, and you can save on expensive taxi fares between the park and the city. This is the best way to ensure smooth transportation and the most cost-effective pricing.
🛒KKday東京秀 (Tonkin Show) 門票+接駁套票In addition to viewing tickets, there is also a shuttle bus service. Since the venue is about an hour’s drive from the city, having a shuttle is much more convenient.

City Shuttle Experience
Our itinerary this time was a ticket plus shuttle package, with the pickup location at the Grand Plaza Hotel in the city.
Although the meeting point listed on KKday was the Lobby, when we arrived, we found the shuttle bus directly in the parking lot. After confirming our registered names, we could board the bus directly.

The bus does not have assigned seating, it’s first-come, first-served. On this day, the bus was almost completely full!
Aside from us, nearly all the passengers were local Vietnamese, with no other foreign tourists.
The bus departs from the city center, and the actual journey takes about half an hour.

On the banner at the entrance to the park is the Vietnamese name for the Hanoi Tokyo Show, with a CNN report logo below.

Follow the crowd to queue at the entrance to exchange tickets, and you’ll receive a white ticket card for entry into the performance area and a seating card.
Park Guide: Vietnamese snacks and the Puppet Museum before the show
The Quintessence of TONKIN performance area is quite large, a comprehensive leisure spot adorned with lanterns, creating a great atmosphere when lit up in the evening.

Many people were strolling and playing in the park with their families, creating a warm sense of reunion, especially around the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Quintessence of Tonkin starts at 7:30 PM and lasts about 1.5 hours. It’s recommended to grab a bite to eat in the park beforehand.
This place is somewhat similar to Taiwan’s food courts, offering a variety of local specialty snacks.
First, fill your stomach with some special Vietnamese snacks.

We ordered a Vietnamese pancake called Bánh Xèo, nicknamed the “Vietnamese version of oyster omelette” (though it contains no oysters).
This is a very authentic traditional Vietnamese snack. The golden pancake might make you think it’s egg-based, but it’s actually made from rice flour and turmeric powder.
The pancake contains some minced meat and lettuce, paired with a specially crafted sauce by the restaurant, making it a very appetizing snack.
Visit the Puppet Museum
After eating, we had a little time left, so we explored the entire park.
Within the park, there is a small Water Puppet Museum. Although the exhibition space is limited, it thoroughly showcases the history and types of Hanoi’s water puppetry.

Vietnamese water puppetry dates back to around the 10th century. Initially performed to celebrate the king, it later became popular among the people and has a history of over a thousand years.
From the lineup of puppets in different costumes, you can see that besides some classical myths, they also reflect the contemporary life of the people.
The one at the top left is the coolest, translated as “Legend of the Holy Sword” (sounds a bit like a game title), which tells the story of King Le Loi in the 15th century being granted a holy sword and defeating his enemies.
Introduction to The Quintessence of Tonkin
As dusk fell, we returned to the entrance of the performance venue, where a crowd had already gathered, ready to enter and watch the show.

Perhaps due to the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, the place was bustling with people, including many families bringing along their elders and children, creating a lively atmosphere.
Tested: Seat Selection—Which Offers the Best View?
From the official website of The Quintessence of Tonkin, you can see the seating is divided into three categories: Silver Ticket, Gold Ticket, and Platinum Ticket. I’ve combined the actual seating chart and the selection map from the website below for your reference.

Platinum is the highest-priced ticket, located at the very top of the seating area (somewhat like a VIP box), with individual seats and a covered roof. However, I felt it was too far from the stage, so I ended up purchasing the middle-tier GOLD ticket.

When buying tickets on KKday, you can also choose your seating area.

⭐ Hanoi Tokyo Show Seating Experience Sharing: I highly recommend the GOLD section! Although it’s not as luxurious as VIP, if you can enter on time, you might be as lucky as us to get the front row center seats! The view is fantastic, allowing you to see the entire stage, with performers right in front of you during the show.
| Seat Name | Area Location | Features | Recommendation |
| Platinum | Topmost section (VIP box) | Independent seats with a covered roof. However, it’s farther from the stage. | Suitable for those seeking privacy and comfort. |
| Gold | Middle row, best view area. | Fantastic view, able to see the entire stage, with clear expressions and movements of the performers. | Highly recommended! Best value for money. |
| Silver | Sides or back. | View has more blind spots, but it’s the cheapest option. | Option for those on a budget. |
Vietnam’s Largest Water Stage Show
What makes me want to watch The Quintessence of TONKIN is the highlight that the entire performance is on water.
This is also the largest water stage in Vietnam, with a spectacular set!

These scenes are not set up from the beginning but change with different segments of the performance, leaving audiences in awe.
To avoid too many spoilers (revealing them might lessen the surprise of seeing it for the first time), let’s just say… scenes will appear from unexpected places.
Six Cultural Highlights: In-depth Analysis of the Performance Content
Besides the impressive hardware, another highlight of The quintessence of TONKIN is the recreation of Northern Vietnam’s cultural and traditional elements.
The entire performance can be divided into six cultural highlights and corresponding stories: ‘Poetry’, ‘Religion’, ‘Officialdom Culture’, ‘Music and Painting’, ‘Traditional Daily Life’, and ‘Festive Celebrations’.
Each segment is accompanied by music according to the current theme, and the music closely ties to the theme, making the entire performance very cohesive.

The performance incorporates a large amount of traditional dance, with performers of all ages and genders. From costumes to movements, from expressions to gestures, they are all meticulously trained, captivating the audience’s attention.

The “religious beliefs” that have supported people throughout history also form a spectacular segment of this performance, with temple scenery and people releasing floating lanterns to pray for blessings vividly recreated.
Immersive technical prowess
From the stage set design, the music playing in your ears, to the precise and graceful movements of the performers.
What surprised me even more was the sound and light effects throughout the entire performance, which were truly breathtaking!

With the combination of lighting effects and smoke, there was a scene where a light tunnel shone from the opposite side of the stage, giving a truly immersive experience. I found it incredibly impressive!
Although the lighting is not the main focus, it perfectly becomes the most essential and brilliant highlight of the performance.
