Introduction to Hanoi Airport – Northern Vietnam’s Transportation Hub
Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport is the most important transportation hub in Northern Vietnam, located in Sóc Sơn District, Hanoi, about half an hour from the city center.
It is the busiest airport in Vietnam after Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport.
Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport
IATA Code: HAN
Location: Largest airport in northern Vietnam
Distance from city center: Approximately 45 km
Travel time: About 35 to 40 minutes
Opening date: January 2, 1978

Where is Hanoi city center?

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, known as the industrial and cultural hub of the country. It is a bustling city rich in history.
The city center of Hanoi is located 45 km south of the international airport, primarily centered around the Old Quarter next to “Hanoi Railway Station,” including popular areas such as the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake area, and Ba Dinh Square.
If you are traveling to Vietnam, it is recommended to stay in these areas for more convenient transportation.
Three ways to get from Hanoi Airport to the city center
| Method | Cost (TWD) | Time | Features | Suitable for |
| Airport Bus (Bus No. 86) | $50 | 40-60 minutes | Cheap, experience local transportation | Backpackers, solo travelers |
| Taxi/Grab | $250 | 30-45 minutes (excluding waiting time) | Flexible, can be arranged according to itinerary | Budget travelers |
| Airport Transfer | $350 | 30-45 minutes | Most convenient, requires advance booking | Family travelers, with luggage |
1. Hanoi Airport Bus – Cheapest, suitable for backpackers
Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, so public transportation is relatively convenient.
If you have no luggage and are traveling alone, you can choose to take the bus to the city center.
When you exit the bus station at Noi Bai Airport Terminal 1, look for the bright orange bus!

Hanoi Airport Bus operates from 5 AM daily until 10 PM, with frequent services approximately every 40 minutes.
Below are the detailed departure times for the Hanoi Bus No. 86 daily schedule:

The one-way fare from the airport to the city center is 45,000 VND (approximately 60 TWD), which is affordable and has many stops.
However, the downside is that it takes more time to reach the city center. Including waiting time, it is recommended to allow for an hour and a half to be safe.
Additionally, there are only 25 seats on the bus, and it can get crowded during peak hours, making it inconvenient if you have large luggage.
2. Airport Taxi (Taxi/Grab)
Another option is to hail a taxi at the airport or use a ride-hailing app.

Taking a private car to the city costs around 250 TWD, which is moderately priced, between airport transfers and buses.
The advantage is flexibility, allowing you to arrange freely according to your arrival time.
However, the downside is that during peak hours, you might have to wait, and it’s harder to assess the quality of the driver and the car.
Additionally, scams are occasionally heard of, so if you’re hailing a car, make sure to verify the license plate on the app before getting in.
When taking Grab from the airport, the driver will charge an additional 15,000 VND for the ‘Toll Fee’, which is legal and reasonable.
3. Airport Transfer – The most convenient option for direct hotel delivery
Finally, the Hanoi airport to city transportation method we chose this time was KKday airport transfer.
Since it has been a long time since we visited Vietnam, and there are only two of us this time, we opted for the safest and most comfortable travel method.
The considerations were, first, that the cost of booking airport transfer with KKday is similar to hailing a car, but it saves the time cost of communication and waiting for a car.
Second, once you leave the airport and hotel, there is a dedicated person to take you to your destination, which is the most convenient way for us.
How to book KKday airport transfer?
KKday airport transfer booking is very convenient, with a one-stop, fully Chinese reservation interface, and they also provide Chinese customer service for online inquiries.
This is not my first time using KKday’s transfer service; I also booked in advance when I went to Bangkok before.
As long as you have a KKday account, prepare the hotel address, flight information, and transfer time, booking Hanoi airport transfer takes less than 10 minutes.

You can choose based on the number of people traveling with you and the amount of luggage. For two of us, each with a backpack and sharing one suitcase, a basic sedan is more than sufficient.

- SUV: Up to 4 people + up to 5 pieces of 24-inch luggage

Hanoi International Airport – Hanoi City Center

On the day we arrived in Hanoi, we landed around 14:15, used an e-visa to clear customs, and it took about half an hour to get our luggage and reach the airport entrance.
At the airport entrance, it was easy to spot the driver holding a sign. The driver kindly helped us with our luggage.

From Hanoi Airport, we headed to the MK Premier Boutique Hotel in the Old Quarter where we were staying. The journey was expected to take 30 minutes, but due to the hectic and busy Hanoi traffic, it took about 45 minutes.
The driver didn’t talk much, but his driving skills were excellent. There was no smell of smoke in the car, which was relatively new and quite clean, making it a very pleasant ride.

After arriving in the Old Quarter, he safely dropped us off at the hotel entrance and only left after handing over our luggage to the hotel staff.
Hanoi City – Hanoi International Airport
Our return flight was at 7 a.m., meaning we had to leave the hotel just after 4 a.m.
Worried about any last-minute issues with calling a cab, we decided to use the KKday Airport Transfer service the night before for peace of mind.

The hotel we stayed at on the last day was in a small alley, and we were initially concerned the driver might not find it.
Unexpectedly, the driver parked outside the alley and personally waited for us at the hotel entrance!
Perhaps he was also worried we might go to the wrong alley, and this kind of attention to detail was truly heartwarming.

The traffic in Hanoi is much smoother late at night. As we sped through this historic city, watching the scenery whiz by outside the window, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of reluctance as I recalled the journey of the past few days.
Aside from facing work life back in Taiwan, what impressed me most about this trip was the friendly and warm treatment we received from different people.

Perhaps it was because we hadn’t had enough sleep in the early morning, or maybe the driver’s skills were really good, but both of us fell asleep on the way to the airport.
When we opened our eyes again, we were already at the departure hall of the international airport.

The driver skillfully unloaded our luggage, allowing us to arrive early and leisurely check in and prepare for boarding.

Fortunately, we had booked airport transfers in advance, as there was quite a crowd at Hanoi airport that day, with long lines at the check-in counters.

After checking in, picking up the ticket, checking luggage, and passing through customs, the sky was already a dim gray as we arrived at the waiting area.
The journey was coming to an end after capturing this photo at the airport.
Hanoi Airport Transportation – KKday Airport Transfer Review
During this trip to Hanoi, starting with the airport transfer, we could feel the warmth and friendliness of Vietnam all the way.
Since the return flight time was quite fixed, we chose KKday airport transfer for both directions as our main mode of transportation, which not only saved time but was also much more convenient!
The driver contacts the tourists the day before and arrives on time on the day. He doesn’t talk much during the journey, but his driving skills are very steady, and the car is clean and tidy, making it the top choice from Hanoi Airport to the city center.
