Renting a Motorbike on Bohol Island, Bohol Island Attractions for Independent Travelers. Most people hire a car at the port when visiting Bohol Island, but this time we chose to rent a motorbike and explore the island. We rented from locals at the port for 400P a day. This local way of traveling is highly recommended, as you can explore Bohol’s attractions and encounter many fun and interesting experiences! Here, we introduce how to rent a motorbike on Bohol Island, things to note when renting a motorbike, and the cost of a day’s itinerary.

How to Rent a Motorbike on Bohol Island

There are many places to rent motorbikes on Bohol Island. The one we used was arranged by a security guard at the port. After negotiating the price, the shop owner rode the bike over to us. We initially thought they would help us with our luggage, but to our surprise, they took all three of us directly to the shop.

When renting a motorbike on Bohol Island, they generally don’t check your driver’s license. Novim Motorbike Rental is no exception, but they will require a passport deposit or a 1000P deposit. I prefer to keep my passport with me (and it’s advisable to always keep your passport safe while traveling), so leaving a passport as collateral is too nerve-wracking. I opted for the 1000P deposit. The owner will provide a document resembling a rental agreement, which you sign, and you’ll use it to reclaim your deposit when returning the bike.

Bohol Island, possibly due to being a tourist area, has a relatively high prevalence of helmet use. This time, I also encountered a police checkpoint for not wearing a helmet.

After signing the documents and making the payment, you can pick up the bike and set off!

Honda BeAT – The National Motorbike of the Philippines

This time, I rented the national motorcycle of the Philippines – Honda BeAT. According to online information, it should be 110CC, and the price is about 45,000 pesos (approximately 27,000 TWD), which is roughly one-third of the price of motorcycles in Taiwan.

The wheels here are relatively thin, and the rims are larger than those of Taiwanese motorcycles, mainly because the asphalt paving rate in the countryside is lower. Larger rims are safer.

The motorcycle has a long and slender body and is not too tall. At 160 cm, I can easily handle it, and I can touch the ground (well, I have to tiptoe a bit). The bike is quite easy to ride.

Bohol Tarsier Sanctuary

The first stop is to see the tarsiers, a must-visit itinerary on Bohol Island. I was quite looking forward to seeing them before setting off. There are two tarsier sanctuaries on Bohol Island, and we visited the one on Tarsier Sanctuary Rd, which is closer to the city, about a half-hour drive.

As soon as you enter the park, you’ll see many signs asking visitors to keep their volume down and stay quiet, as tarsiers are timid and nervous by nature. If frightened, they might engage in self-harming or suicidal behavior. Regardless of how noisy people from certain countries usually are, they all become quiet here XD.

The ticket is 60P per person. After payment, there will be a brief education session explaining the habits and growth of the tarsiers. The explanation is in English, but the vocabulary is not too difficult. Then, you enter the forest where staff will guide you to find traces of these tarsiers.

We saw about 4 to 5 tarsiers that day. Each tarsier is approximately ten centimeters long. It’s recommended to have a long-focus lens to capture them. The tarsiers look startled, adorably ugly, and their small size gives them a rather amusing appearance.

Opening hours: 09:00–16:00
Duration of visit: About half an hour.

Bohol Man-Made Forest

The second stop is the man-made forest, which was established for soil and water conservation. All the trees were artificially transplanted, so they grow very neatly. This attraction does not require a ticket and is located on the road to Chocolate Hills.

As you ride into this forest, it becomes refreshingly cool. There is a clearing by the roadside where you can park and take photos. Many tour groups stop here for pictures, but be cautious as the cars drive quite fast here.

This is a photo spot with a serene environment. Sunlight filters through the treetops, making it a pretty place. It can serve as a rest stop on your way to the Chocolate Hills.

Location: Loay Interior Road, Bilar, Bohol, Philippines
Entrance Fee: 0P
Duration: Approximately 10 minutes.

Chocolate Hills of Bohol

After leaving the man-made forest, continue riding for about half an hour to reach the Chocolate Hills. You’ll see a yellow ticket booth where you pay 50 pesos per person to go up the hill.

The weather was quite nice on the way up, with blue skies and white clouds accompanying the ride. Along the way, you’ll see the Chocolate Hills one by one.

To reach the top viewing deck, you need to climb this super long staircase. It’s quite steep, and if you’re not in good shape like me, you’ll be out of breath quickly.

The last third of the climb is almost 90 degrees steep, and it’s truly exhausting. Looks like I’ll need to exercise more when I return to Taiwan.

This unique terrain is said to have been formed by volcanic eruptions, where rocks were scattered and covered by limestone. Eventually, through the uplifting of the seabed, these small hills were formed. The entire Bohol Island has 1,268 conical hills, with heights ranging from 40 to 120 meters.

During the dry season in the Philippines, from February to May, the sun dries the grass, and with the lack of moisture, the hilltops turn chocolate brown, which is how the ‘Chocolate Hills’ got their name.

Duration of stay: about half an hour.

Loboc River Cruise Lunch

Our final stop was the Loboc River for a cruise lunch. Spending 650P per person was a bit painful, making it the most expensive meal of this Cebu trip, but it’s a must-visit experience on Bohol Island, so we decided to give it a try.

The highlight of the “River Cruise Lunch” is the “cruise,” not the “lunch.” Remember, no expectations, no disappointments.

Dining on the boat is in a buffet style, with about 7-8 dishes and three types of fruit. It’s enough to fill you up. The fried chicken is decent, but the rest is quite average. Again, the focus is on the “cruise,” not the “lunch” QQ.

Oh, and drinks on the boat are charged separately.

Unfortunately, we were seated at the edge of the boat, where the midday sun was blazing, making it too hot to eat. Thankfully, the friendly couple next to us let us move inward, or we might have been sun-dried by the end of the cruise XD.

Along the way, we passed a small bamboo house where a traditional dance performance was arranged. There was also a singer on the boat performing live. Besides singing English songs, they even sang “The Moon Represents My Heart.” I’ve heard street performers sing it in Vietnam before; it truly is a classic.

After a satisfying meal, everyone takes photos around the boat. The Loboc River, known as the Amazon of the Philippines, is abundant with water and offers a tropical rainforest scenery. The entire river cruise takes about an hour, with the green waters providing a picturesque backdrop for photos. Dining on the boat while enjoying the views of the Loboc River is a delightful experience.

Bohol Island One-Day Tour: Scooter Rental Costs & Experiences

Is renting a scooter on Bohol Island fun? Let me share some interesting incidents we encountered on the road.

First, we didn’t exchange enough money (thinking the exchange rate would be better back in Cebu City). On the last day, we were short 20 pesos for fuel (unexpectedly scrambling for coins over just 12 New Taiwan Dollars at the gas station!). We had to shamelessly ask the gas station attendant if he would accept 20 New Taiwan Dollars. Fortunately, he did, but couldn’t hide his amused smile, which was quite embarrassing.

Another incident was when our helmets got wet, and we thought we could sneak by without wearing them (a wrong example). As luck would have it, we encountered a police checkpoint. Thankfully, the officer just reminded us to wear our helmets, took a photo with us, and let us go. Perhaps it was because we looked hilariously dirty and disheveled after taking off our sunglasses XD.

Throughout the trip, riding a scooter around the island is definitely more tiring than hiring a car, with the sun and lack of air conditioning. However, you can stop whenever you see beautiful scenery or want to take photos. The diverse landscapes of the city and countryside along the way make it an exhilarating experience. Plus, the little adventures that come with scooter travel, unlike car tours, have become cherished memories for us. If you don’t mind riding, I highly recommend exploring Bohol Island on a scooter!

It is not recommended to leave your documents, especially your passport, as collateral. It’s better to lose the deposit than to let your passport out of your sight.

According to Philippine regulations, foreigners holding a valid driver’s license from their country (such as a Taiwanese license) can drive within 90 days of entry.

In practice: Most rental companies only check your passport or deposit, and do not strictly inspect your driver’s license.
Suggestion: To be safe, it is strongly recommended to obtain an “International Driving Permit” in Taiwan and carry it with you. If you encounter a police check, having an international permit will save you a lot of trouble.

Currently, the fair rental price on Bohol Island and Panglao Island is about 350P – 500P / 24 hours.

One-day rental: Usually 400P – 500P.
Multi-day rental (3 days or more): You have a good chance of negotiating 350P – 400P/day.
Bargaining tips: If you are renting two or more bikes or for more than three days, feel free to ask the owner for a discount, which usually can be 50P – 100P cheaper.

Main roads (Ring Road): The road conditions are excellent! Most are smooth asphalt roads with not much traffic, making for a comfortable ride.
Small roads to attractions: When heading to waterfalls or hidden beaches, you might encounter gravel or muddy roads (especially after rain), so it’s best to slow down.
Special attention: Locals tend to ride fast, and many sections of the road lack street lights at night, so it’s advisable for beginners to avoid night riding.

Alona Beach
