2019 Ho Chi Minh Attractions, the Ben Thanh Market is a must-visit spot for Ho Chi Minh travel.
During this Ho Chi Minh travel, I tasted the most local snacks at the Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh!
Ben Thanh Market (Ben Thanh Market), completed in 1912, is a century-old large indoor market located in the Ho Chi Minh city center. It gathers various Saigon specialties and Ho Chi Minh souvenirs and is a hub for Ho Chi Minh cuisine. You absolutely cannot miss it when traveling to Ho Chi Minh!

Ben Thanh Market – Ho Chi Minh’s Most Authentic Traditional Market
Whenever we visit a new country, Penny and I love exploring local supermarkets and traditional markets. It’s a quick way to understand the local culture, cuisine, and specialties. Plus, I enjoy capturing the bustling scenes of people working and shopping in the markets. Each country’s markets have their own unique charm.

Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh is located right in the city center. Completed in 1912, it is a century-old large indoor market and one of the few remaining buildings from the Saigon era.
The area nearby is not only a major bus terminal and city transport hub but also a key spot for tourists to exchange money and buy souvenirs. It’s always bustling with people, whether on weekdays or holidays!
However, be cautious as this area is also a hotspot for pickpockets and scams. Staying alert is the number one rule for travel safety.
What does Ben Thanh Market sell?
As the largest traditional market in Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Thanh Market has gradually become tourist-oriented. Most of the items sold are Vietnamese specialties and souvenirs, such as handmade bamboo baskets, imitation bags and clothes, jade pendants, jewelry, nuts, dried fruits, or fabrics. Of course, there are also souvenirs like postcards, magnets, and keychains. The variety of goods is vast and diverse.
Whether it’s enjoyable to shop here might be subjective, but the market is full of dazzling items. Walking through, vendors greet and haggle with tourists in various languages, making it a very interesting experience.

Actually, I really like the photos above of the Penang City Market, each vendor in their own little shop.
Perhaps they’re idly scrolling through their phones, waiting for customers, or busy with their work. These are the daily lives of the townsfolk, and it’s the vibrant colors of travel that leave the deepest impressions.
Vietnamese Food Hub – Enjoy Snacks at Penang City Market

As food enthusiasts, we were particularly delighted with the authentic snacks we enjoyed at Penang City Market!
Compared to the Vietnamese cuisine we had at a restaurant the night before, we casually chose a snack stall at Penang City Market. Without luxurious decor, we sat on small stools and ordered a few Vietnamese snacks from a simple laminated A4 menu, and every single dish was incredibly delicious!

On a summer afternoon, we couldn’t handle hot pho, so we ordered this bowl of Mixed Cold Rice Noodles, featuring fried spring rolls, sugarcane shrimp, and Vietnamese grilled meat. The crushed nuts on top paired with the tangy sauce were aromatic and very appetizing.

This plate of fresh spring rolls wrapped with plump shrimp is the second most amazing snack, especially with the excellent and authentic peanut sauce, which is rich and fragrant without being greasy, perfectly complementing the refreshing lettuce wrap.

Vietnam’s must-eat fried spring rolls are unbelievably delicious.
Having visited Vietnam twice, whether at restaurants or street food stalls, the fried spring rolls are almost never disappointing. Even though they might look like they’ve been sitting for a while, they don’t have that stale oil taste. The fillings are stir-fried, and the outer layer is crispy, making them perfect to pair with a chilled juice or beer!
Compared to the high expenses of dining at a restaurant the previous night, snacking at the Penang City Market costs very little—a cup of juice for fifty thousand, a bowl of noodles for sixty thousand… it’s satisfying and fulfilling. This afternoon visit to the Penang City Market is truly unforgettable.
The Penang City Market operates from 07:00 to 19:00.
Here, many of the items sold are primarily Vietnamese specialties and souvenirs, such as handmade bamboo baskets, imitation backpacks and clothing, jade pendants and jewelry, nuts and dried fruits, or fabrics. Of course, there are also various souvenirs like postcards, magnets, and keychains. The range of products is extensive and diverse.
As a century-old local market, there are many Vietnamese snacks available.
Must-try dishes include Vietnamese pho, fried spring rolls, fresh spring rolls, and cold vermicelli salad.
Opposite the Penang City Market, there are two jewelry shops where you can exchange money.
