Introduction to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam: The Charm of One of the World’s Seven Natural Wonders

Ha Long Bay (Vietnamese: Vịnh Hạ Long) is a body of water in northeastern Vietnam, covering an area of 1,553 square kilometers, known as the “Guilin on the Sea.”
This body of water includes nearly 2,000 islands, most of which are composed of limestone.
These limestone islands were formed approximately 500 million years ago, influenced by a tropical humid climate, and host a variety of unique flora and fauna, making it a precious primitive marine area on Earth.
Due to this unique geographical environment, Ha Long Bay was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, and through global voting, it became one of the “New Seven Natural Wonders of the World.”

The Culture of Ha Long Bay
Due to its geographical location, Ha Long Bay holds significant military and economic importance. The fishermen currently residing in Ha Long Bay have preserved the unique cultural values of the past.
The population living in Ha Long Bay is about 1,500 people, most of whom live on small boats and rafts supported by tires and plastic barrels, making a living by fishing.

In addition to fishing, due to the development of the tourism industry, some residents also offer homestays, boat tours, meals, or sell goods to passengers on cruise ships.

Here, there is not only scenery but also the culture of fishing villages living on the water. Whether you love the grandeur of nature or want to experience the life of floating communities, Ha Long Bay is a must-visit destination in a lifetime.
Where is Ha Long Bay? Geographic Location

Among the visitors to Ha Long Bay, over 90% depart from Hanoi. Therefore, the transportation guide below will focus on departures from Hanoi.
Ha Long Bay Travel Season: Best Months and Typhoon Season Tips
Ha Long Bay has a tropical monsoon climate, and the weather directly affects the ‘beauty’ of the scenery.
- Best Seasons (April-May, October-November): The weather is cool and dry, with a low chance of rain, making it the most comfortable time for travel.
- Rainy and Typhoon Season (June-September): Although it’s the peak summer holiday season, typhoons are common. If a typhoon warning is issued, ferry services may be canceled at any time.
- Winter (December-February): Temperatures are lower (15-20°C), and fog is common. While it offers a picturesque landscape like a traditional painting, it’s not suitable for swimming.
My Ha Long Bay Travel Experience
We visited at the end of September, which is the tail end of the typhoon season and just before the dry season begins. The weather was very cool, and it wasn’t too cold for water activities, making it a great time to visit.
Ha Long Bay Transportation Guide: Transfers from Hanoi, Private Cars, and Seaplanes
Due to the long distance, transportation to Ha Long Bay is the most important preparation.

With the opening of new expressways, the travel time from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay has been significantly reduced to 2.5 – 3 hours. The main options are:
- Direct Shuttle (Limousine Bus): Highly recommended! Usually included in cruise packages or can be booked separately. High comfort level, priced around 300-500 TWD.
- Private Car: Suitable for families, or those traveling with seniors or children. Flexible timing, no need to share with strangers, and offers the highest comfort.
- Bus (Budget Option): Departs from My Dinh Bus Station. It’s the cheapest option but takes longer and is less comfortable.
- Seaplane: The most luxurious choice, taking only 45 minutes, with the added bonus of an aerial view of the World Heritage site.

Is Halong Bay fun? Travel Insights

Finally, here are my travel insights from this trip to Halong Bay.
Having visited Central and Southern Vietnam, this Northern Vietnam trip, Halong Bay was the itinerary I looked forward to the most.
This sea area, rated as one of the ‘New Seven Natural Wonders of the World’, boasts incredibly enchanting scenery.
To thoroughly explore the beauty of Halong Bay, I arranged a three-day, two-night five-star cruise trip. Just pack your bags, and you can board the ship for a carefree vacation.
Throughout the journey, all meals were prepared by the ferry staff. There was a sunset party in the evening, spring roll making classes, and a fire dance show at night. The rooms on the ship were comfortable. During the day, we visited islands, local fishing villages, swam at secret beaches, kayaked, and explored caves. These were all unique travel experiences for me.
Even when there were no activities, as the ship sailed, I was surrounded by the beautiful horizon, with magnificent cliffs all around. Almost every moment, the scenery left me in awe.
I found Halong Bay incredibly fun, the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression after three days of exploration!

💡 Ha Long Bay Guide Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
Ha Long Bay in English is “HA LONG BAY” (Vietnamese: Vịnh Hạ Long).
If you want to witness the beauty of Ha Long Bay, two days and one night is definitely enough. Spend one night sleeping on the boat and witness the stunning scenery of this “World Natural Heritage” from sunrise to sunset.
However, if you have more time, I highly recommend a three-day, two-night itinerary, allowing you more time to leisurely enjoy this beautiful sea area.
Recommended itinerary: 【New Route】Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay 3 Days 2 Nights Cruise Tour
The best seasons to visit Ha Long Bay are April-May and October-November. During these times, there are no typhoons, less rain, and the weather is not too cold, making it perfect for boat tours or water activities.
As the boat sails on the sea, the Wifi signal is usually weak or even disconnected. It is recommended to use a local Sim card (Viettel has better signal), but in some dead zones, there may still be no signal. It’s suggested to put down your phone and enjoy the scenery.
Most of the food, drinks, and entertainment on the cruise are all-inclusive, except for some beverages and alcohol, which may require additional payment.
Ha Long Bay is an inland sea with very calm waters, so you hardly feel any rocking, which is completely different from sailing on the open sea. It’s very suitable for the elderly or those prone to seasickness.
