Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz about the Hong Kong Airlines buy-one-get-one-free offer! Let me share my experience from my last trip to Hong Kong. The round-trip ticket, including 23 kg of luggage, was about 5200 TWD. The in-flight entertainment was adequate (considering it’s a short flight), and they provided meals, making it a pleasant flying experience.

We booked our tickets through South East Travel Agency, and even when our flight was canceled, they were very helpful in assisting us, even after office hours! This article shares my Hong Kong Airlines flight experience with everyone.

Is Hong Kong Airlines a low-cost carrier? Understand its positioning and features
Hong Kong Airlines (Hong Kong Airlines) is not a low-cost carrier (LCC), but a “Full-Service Carrier”.
People often confuse it with Hong Kong’s only low-cost airline, “HK Express“. Although both are based in Hong Kong, they are completely independent companies with different market positions!
| Comparison Items | Hong Kong Airlines | HK Express |
| Airline Positioning | Hybrid Traditional Airline (services depend on ticket price) | Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) |
| Carry-on Baggage | ✅ 1 piece 7kg (suitcase) + 1 personal item | ✅ 1 piece 7kg (suitcase) + 1 personal item |
| Checked Baggage | ✅ 23kg | ❌ Additional purchase required (charged by weight) |
| In-flight Meals | ✅ Some fares include snacks/meal boxes (depending on route) | ❌ Pre-order required (no outside food allowed) |
| Seat Adjustment | ✅ Free (in some areas) | ❌ Additional purchase required |
| Suitable For | Value seekers, those with baggage needs, families | Solo travelers, backpackers, extreme budget savers |
- Free Checked Baggage: Starting April 2025, all Hong Kong Airlines fares will include at least one piece of 23kg free checked baggage.
- Free In-flight Meals: All flights and classes offer complimentary meals. Recently, economy class introduced a fun Hong Kong-style ‘two-dish rice’ hot meal and dim sum, allowing you to savor authentic flavors in the sky.
- In-flight Entertainment: Most flights are equipped with personal screens or offer wireless streaming entertainment, so you can watch movies, listen to music, and pass the time during your flight.
Although it is a full-service airline, it adopts a more flexible strategy in its operations, trying to find a sweet spot between ‘full service’ and ‘affordable prices’, making it a traditional airline with a hybrid model flavor.

HX285 (Taipei → Hong Kong)

Hong Kong Airlines offers numerous flights, not only to Hong Kong but also to other destinations.
This trip was on a Saturday, and Taoyuan Airport was crowded. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use the self-check-in. Simply scan your passport and enter your booking number to quickly print your boarding pass.
Seating Space and In-flight Entertainment

The seats on Hong Kong Airlines are in a very Chinese style with bright red color, featuring two rows on each side and four seats in the middle. The seat size is similar to that of Macau Airlines.

The plane offers basic entertainment options, such as movies, TV shows, and music. However, since the flight time is only about two hours, I just listened to some music and rested (after all, I woke up very early XD).
In-flight Meal Honest Review

The in-flight meal on the outbound flight was seafood fried rice, which was quite bland and the rice was a bit hard. It wasn’t very tasty XD, so it’s better to save your appetite for Hong Kong’s delicacies.
(This is a review of past meal content; current catering services may have been adjusted. Please refer to what is actually provided.)

The flight arrived on time. An arrival card needs to be filled out upon entry, which is easy to complete as it includes Traditional Chinese.
HX264 (Hong Kong → Taipei)

Hong Kong Airport was urgently closed for two afternoons. After the closure, with the help of Mr. Zhan from Southeast Travel Agency, we successfully changed our tickets. We are truly grateful to Mr. Zhan for assisting us across the sea until after 8 PM, helping us contact Hong Kong Airlines, change tickets, and issue additional tickets.
We finally boarded the flight back to Taiwan on the afternoon of 8/14.

The return flight was very full, and there was no entertainment system on board. The screen on the seatback only showed the flight path.

The in-flight meal on the return was a simple hot dog bun. Since we had already had lunch at the airport, it served as a small snack.
What to do if Hong Kong Airlines cancels or delays flights? My real experience with changing tickets
This time, we unfortunately encountered airport closures and flight cancellations. Fortunately, we booked through Mr. Zhan at Southeast Travel Agency. Even after office hours, he was very enthusiastic and helped us contact Hong Kong Airlines, handle standby, and change tickets across the sea.
Ultimately, we were able to smoothly board the return flight to Taiwan two days later. This experience made me deeply appreciate that booking through a reliable travel agency provides an extra layer of assurance in emergencies.
Conclusion: Is Hong Kong Airlines worth flying with? My honest review
Currently, direct flights from Taipei to Hong Kong are offered by Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air, Greater Bay Airlines, STARLUX Airlines, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Express, and Hong Kong Airlines.
Excluding budget airlines, Hong Kong Airlines tickets include luggage, meals, and in-flight entertainment. There were no significant delays during our actual flight. During peak seasons, when other airlines don’t have special offers, it should be the best choice for budget travelers.

No. Hong Kong Airlines is a traditional airline, and the fare usually includes checked baggage and in-flight meals. In contrast, HK Express is a low-cost carrier, where the fare only includes carry-on luggage, and checked baggage and meals must be purchased separately.
The baggage policy of Hong Kong Airlines may vary depending on the fare class. The usual checked baggage allowance for economy class is 23kg, with carry-on luggage limited to 7kg. However, there are often different promotional offers, so it’s recommended to check the baggage rules for your ticket type on the official website when booking.
In our experience, the in-flight meals on Hong Kong Airlines are quite ordinary, but for short-haul flights, having hot meals available is already a plus. It’s suggested not to have too high expectations and save your appetite for Hong Kong’s culinary delights!
Hong Kong Airlines is a full-service airline with a good safety record and is certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Yes, all fare classes include complimentary in-flight meals, and recently, they have introduced Hong Kong-style specialty dishes.
